In the midst of this summer heat wave and in the full flow of musical abundance I am releasing my second new album in less than three months! Quite different from the previous album – As I Breathe – which was a mix of solo shakuhachi pieces with more colourful musical collaborations, this new album Night Journey– Odes for Shakuhachi and Cello is a suite of lyrical duets for shakuhachi and cello, created with the amazing and wonderful cello player Matthew Barley.
Matthew and I first met and played together over 10 years ago in what was a fleeting but magical musical encounter. At that time we spontaneously set the intention to make an album together, and now, many years later, here it is.
The album was recorded live, totally improvised, in the deep of the night, between midnight and 5.00am. The music reflects this nocturnal mode and has some dark and mysterious, sumptuous and silky sounds and moods.
